Swerve: Professional wrestling terminology that describes an unexpected action or event that takes the audience by surprise.

ShoeboxLA is pleased to present its first group show, Swerve, curated by gallery co-founder Sophia Allison. Artists Amparo Jelsma, Melissa Manfull, Julio Panisello, Carl Smith, and Jaime Ursic primarily work in the two-dimensional realm (painting, drawing, printmaking); for this exhibition, however, each artist was asked to create a work of sculpture. Beyond size restrictions, no other instructions or requirements were provided. While it is not unusual for artists to work in both painting and sculpture simultaneously, it can be a challenge to move fluidly between these mediums. The resulting work may or may not be a translation of the artists’ primary practice but it will be exciting to view the results. Join us for this special event.

ShoeboxLA gives Los Angeles artists an opportunity to do one-day, site-specific exhibitions outside the traditional gallery setting. Founders Sophia Allison and Paul W. Evans provide an intimate space that challenges artists' and viewers' expectations of size and scale. Locations change for each show but the space remains the same.

ShoeboxLA is pleased to present Los Angeles artist Michael Blasi. Blasi's Soundsystem playfully explores the relationship between audio and visual, the concrete and abstract, where hard wiring and electric pulses meet soft metaphor and symbolic form. Blasi employs a variety of music including Somali funk, Egyptian jazz, and Jamaican dub over a recycled computer speaker contraption within the gallery, thus making it an acoustic chamber. His mountain-like forms and colorful spheres act as reservoirs of potential musical energy, physical manifestations of the signals that travel to speakers through wires and circuitry, across an array of forms that resemble a circuit board.

Originally from Los Angeles, Michael Blasi received his BFA from Purchase College, New York; he returned here in the late ‘90s, where he has been teaching and making art.

ShoeboxLA is pleased to present Anita Bunn: An Ordinary Spectacle. For this exhibition Bunn combines traditional photographic techniques with contemporary digital technologies while referencing Nicéphore Niépce’s 1826 work “View from my Window at Gras,” which is considered to be the earliest photo-process image. Using the gallery itself as a pinhole camera, Bunn produces seemingly still and silent photographic prints alongside digital works that romantically embrace the urban environment of Los Angeles while gently prodding the viewer to take a closer look by turning away from spectacle.

Originally from Houston, Texas, Anita Bunn has lived in Los Angeles for nearly 25 years. She received an MFA in Photography from Claremont Graduate University in 2007 and has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Her work is in many public and private collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Kim Tucker is a ceramic artist you really should know about. She has a gallery event this weekend with ShoeboxLA and if you blink, you just might miss it! Read on to find out why you should go…

Your first impression of Kim Tucker’s ceramic figures is one of whimsy. They come in the size of small children or as smaller miniatures participating in what appear to be regular people activities. They are innocent and dressed in coveralls or what may be cotton skirts or maybe a frock. In a flash of a millisecond, you’re moved to tears. They are human and fantasy. They are vulnerable. You notice their fragility as if co-opting on their clay make-up, a material that easily breaks when not handled delicately. You see their shapes are awkward, their expressions are often somber and some are adorned in strange bumps or smiley face blemishes. There’s a desire to protect them like your own children or a friend, while acknowledging their familiar sorrow within yourself. It cannot be ignored. Using a medium traditionally built for decorative arts of elaborate shapes and vases, Kim’s twist in creating her menagerie is even sweeter. You must experience her work for yourself.

Kim recently exhibited a show with ShoeboxLA, a unique monthly pop-up gallery that creates installations in creative spaces. This event was a 3-hour show at All Star Lanes, a bowling alley in Eagle Rock. I missed it. I was crestfallen. The idea of her ceramic breakables in an All Star Lane gallery seems like the ideal setting for the emotional twist she infuses into her figures. The great news is ShoeboxLA will return this Sunday, October 30th from 2:00 – 4:00pm with a second show for Kim at Vlad the Retailer on Heliotrope in Los Angeles (a couple doors down from Scoops and Cafecito Organico Coffee near LA City College). This is a wonderful chance to enjoy Kim’s work for yourself and one of ShoeboxLA’s intelligent installations - and some yummy Scoops salted caramel ice cream, to boot! See you there.

Art show rolls into Eagle Rock bowling alley

Pop-up art gallery Shoebox L.A. will present the sculpture of Kim Tucker this Saturday, Oct. 15 for a three-hour long exhibit at All Star Lanes bowling alley in Eagle Rock. Not used to going to a bowling alley to view art? Shoebox L.A. seeks to challenge the traditional expectations of what a gallery is. Founders Paul W. Evans and Sophia Allison say they are drawn to spaces that “are not spaces one would initially connect with art” and have room for their portable gallery, a box with moveable walls that is barely big enough (24”x18”x8”) to hold a few pairs of bowling shoes.

“Both Shoebox and Kim love All Star Lanes,” said Evans, referring to the Eagle Rock bowling center that has hosted numerous bands. “We also try to focus on places that people may not know of or have maybe gotten off the radar. And then we hope business owners will allow us three hours of viewing time.”

What will be tucked into the Shoebox gallery on Saturday? Here are the details about the Kim Tucker: Unquiet Slumber show:

Tucker’s Unquiet Slumber is a sculptural expedition into the wild and woolly world of the unconscious. Hidden desires, complications, filtered memories and primal impulses mix together in the bold world of the inner mind. Within the exhibition, a central female figure represents the human experience as all and nothing. She is the imperfect Eden where impulses prevail and thoughts run freely. The surrounding figures are manifestations of her unfettered mind, primal creatures, pitiful ghosts and human dummies. Unquiet Slumber is a challenge to the rules and boundaries of the conscious world; it is simply a place where the mind can freely experience impulse and wild abandon.

Shoebox L.A. last show was at the Little Tokyo Galleria. “It was great fun and the artist did work that was inspired by mall architecture,” Evans said.

Maloof explores the odd-ball and humorous architectural motifs of mini-mall and strip mall culture seen around Southern California. These images have a cartoony or folksy look yet are used for serious marketing purposes. Maloof's monuments celebrate our submission to the passive pleasures of mass visual consumption.

Who's Behind ShoeboxLA?

ShoeboxLA is the brainchild of artists Sophia Allison and Paul W. Evans, both of whom arrived in Los Angeles nearly 9 years ago. Paul, from New York, and Sophia, from North Carolina, agree Los Angeles offers artists the freedom to experiment, try new things and cross boundaries. With that in mind, ShoeboxLA came about. How small can a gallery be to function? Can a gallery sustain itself with no real location? Will artists be up to the challenge? And finally, will people come?

With initial guidelines that all art would be made specifically for the gallery and work produced would not be miniature, but “appropriate for the gallery’s size”, the two decided their gallery would measure a mere 24”x18”x8”. Instead of having one location with hours, the gallery would arrive at different locations around Los Angeles. After all, Los Angeles inspired the idea, so it’s only fitting ShoeboxLA would feature venues throughout the city. One day events for three hours seemed more like a celebration. With the help of graphic designer Emmanuel V. Gutierrez, ShoeboxLA got its logo. For the physical space, builder Alex Gano produced a simple white box with movable, super-magnetic walls. Encouragement from artists, dealers, friends, family and business owners helped secure the first year of scheduled shows around Los Angeles. Don’t be surprised if ShoeboxLA pops up at your local laundromat, mall or eating establishment. They’re even curating their first group show in early 2012. Come see what ShoeboxLA has to offer. Sophia and Paul look forward to meeting you and sharing their vision.

Sophia Allison earned an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a BFA from East Carolina University (Greenville, NC). She works in a variety of media including sewing, sculpture and installation. Her work has been in several exhibitions within the U.S and abroad including d.e.n. contemporary art, Andrew Shire Gallery, Kristi Engle Gallery, the Torrance Art Museum, the Insa Art Center and Gallery Ann in Seoul, Korea, and the Los Angeles Art Association/Gallery 825. Reviews have appeared in Artillery Magazine, MAKE Magazine, Artscene, the Los Angeles Times and the Glendale News-Press. In 2006, she was one of six artists who created Sweater, a collaborative installation directed by artist Tim Hawkinson. Paul W. Evans earned his BFA from the School of Visual Arts (New York, NY). Recent exhibitions in Los Angeles include the Institute of Cultural Inquiry and the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock. He has shown extensively in the US and abroad, including Clementine Gallery, Lump Gallery, Eyewash Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the University of Illinois at Chicago, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Most recently he co-curated the group show Cries and Whispers at Sam Lee Gallery. From 2009 – 2011 he curated for Heather Arndt’s Happy during which time he founded H.A.C.K.
